The AP story reminds me of the early 1990ies, when IWC tried to transpond the concept of pocket watch to the "Jeans-Generation".

They created the waterproof(!) IWC Ingenieur SL Pocket Watch ref. 5215. Great watch. I owned the example in the pics here. Commercially a total fail.
