what you're referring also works with cars as well, an example would be the BMW 3-series vs. 7-series engine. stuff that is more mass produced, the engineers are able to work out the flaws and kinks with each update. unfortunately this isn't the case with stuff produced in limited quantities and all

Patek Philippe: ongoing trend

One of my relatives had a Datejust during the 90s and had the diamond indices plucked from the dial by shady watch repairer. This was in Shanghai, not the boonies... It's really hard to trust a nice watch in China, too many counterfeits out there...
