Patek Philippe: Patek 5170J

Still cannot understand why hasn't 5170J become as desirable as many sports watches. People say, too many were produced, but certainly fewer were produced compared with 5711 or 5167....

Patek Philippe: According to Patek

history, Calatrava refers to a round simple timepiece inspired by Bauhaus design where form follows function. 5522 does correspond well to this description. It is however a modern Calatrava and differs from original 96. There should always be progression.

Patek Philippe: Thank you all for your nice comments!

It’s funny how initially I was on the haunt for more complicated pieces, then years later one realizes that all one needs a simple timepiece that has that internal beauty that Patek knows and provides to collectors year after year.

Patek Philippe: Full balance bridge

I noticed a full balance bridge on the movement, which is first for Patek, as they used hook bridge in the past.

Patek Philippe: 5170J Roman numeral dial

Vintage looking crisp dial. J and P versions of 5170 had only one dial layout except for Beyer edition of 5170J.

Patek Philippe: Thank you everyone for your kind words about the photo and the watch I am wearing

It is interesting how fashion messes with our brain. Yellow gold is not in now and at times it does not feel like it fits the attire, while steel or white metals always feel fine. However, I suspect that if yellow gold on watches would become a “norm” again, we would like it much more just from that
