I cannot deny that the finishing of the modern pieces is, somewhat inferior when compared to previous models.
However I don’t think it’s fair to characterize that the finishing is under par, or that the money paid is excessive relative to the finishing.
It’s not as if we got nothing in return.
Let’s take the 5070 vs the 5170 movement. And let’s agree that the finishing on the 5070 is somewhat better than the 5170.
The patents and technical developments contained in the 5170 blow the 5070 out of the water.
The dynamometric crown.
The ability of the chrono hand to continue running infinitely without undue wear, unlike the 5070.
It incorporates an instantaneous jumping 30 minute counter.
It incorporates a stop second mechanism for exact time setting.
6 patented innovations
- optimized tooth profile.
- precision adjustment of wheel mesh at the column wheel.
- optimized synchronization of the clutch and brake levers
- slotted minute counter cam
- self setting hammers
- hammers pivoted between jewel bearings.
I could go on but I believe the point is made. Yes the previous generation had slightly better finishing but there’s so much
more to a modern Patek movement in some cases.
And all of this innovation priced less than what you would have to pay for the previous generation.
I’d say the emotion is more about the past than it is the present where technically the movement is far far superior.
Yes I can forgive a little less finishing for all the added features and ability.
