In this jurisdiction a driver who has learnt the basics, but who is still very new to the wheel, is required to spend a period ‘on probation’. Such a probationary driver is required to display on her or his car, fore and aft, a plate such as this:

As you can see, it is a ‘P’ plate. Such a ‘newbie’ is a “’P’ plater”; it seemed to translate well to the horological pursuits also.

A novice in canon law and tradition is a prospective member of a religious order who is being tried and being proven for suitability for admission to a religious order of priests, religious brothers, or religious sisters.  After a period of time as a postulant  the person will be received as a novice in a ceremony that most often involves being clothed with the traditional habit of the particular religious community. Novices are not admitted to vows until they have successfully completed the prescribed period of training. This usually lasts one year, though in some orders and communities it is two.
