When Time Out first opened its cyber-doors nearly two years ago one of the first threads invited participants to introduce themselves. It was a novel approach given the usual anonymity inherent in fora such as these but it was received in great spirit at the time, and it was great to put faces, or stories, to the noms de plume and avatars which had already become familiar on the other fora.
Here's the original thread: timeout.watchprosite.com .
It seemed back then to really enhance the spirit of community.
Who was pplater then? -

..of those who made the original 'introductions' thread so interesting when TimeOut began and back then you posted a photo of yourself on the walkway of a sensational building:
This may be displaying Antipodean ignorance, but the standard of the preservation/restoration of that building suggests that it is a building of some significance. Is that so?
Thanks for chipping in a second time (with a photo equally as interesting as the first!).
Cheers,
pplater.

Definitely good to have you as a participant in these meanderings. The Independents always welcome a supporter (even one who has a Roman bent (;-))! tempusfugit This message has been edited by tempusfugit on 2009-08-28 19:51:20

Hi Amery,
Great to have you amongst us. You have already mentioned a number of interests that are dear to many of us on PuristS and TO: books, music, films, food, HiFi, travel, watches, vintage, and all mixed with a sense of humor. You will fit in very well around here!
Warmest regards

Glad to meet you, Andrew
Aug 30 2009,12:26 PM And thanks so much for that Very Telling Pic! In this case I am Obelix, after being confused and confounded by the operating instrunctions on the latest video device. My friend and business partner Dieter actually does bear a resemblance to Asterix. Nice Zenith there, by the way. No time as yet to try out my new digital camera, with its many pages of instructional material, but for now a Pic from a few years ago, in the music room of my apartment - only for that - not thiis tiny room where I sleep and write watch-relateded posts . this time OT! - to the Purists. Tubes and Celtic horns to you! Amery ![]() ![]()

Thanks for sharing that …

Very nice. I don’t recognise the power amps. Perhaps we can get an audio thread going again when you have read that camera instruction manual; I would love to see some more. It looks like a fairly ‘live’ room? Love the horns too. That puts you in a whole ‘other’ category of audiophile.
Impressed.

Hi back, Daos!

Your use of capitals to underscore your distaste was not missed Art - “Reduction In Force” is an euphemism on a par with “Collateral Damage” for the extent of its callous inhumanity. Doubtless its use assists cynical corporate robots to forget that it is humans who are ‘outplaced’ as an organisation ‘downsizes’ in order to ‘consolidate resources’. There is a terrible human toll associated with this unprecedented meltdown that is ignored amidst the deluge of charts, graphs, records and statistics: we become desensitised by endless babble about losses and bailouts of telephone number proportion. Meanwhile, another thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand families toss and turn wondering how they will survive tomorrow’s New World Order. If somehow we are not all touched by it already, we will be before long.
Vale amici – non amissi sed praemissi.
On a less gloomy note: you are looking as well as you did in the original thread two years ago. In that sense, little has changed. However, does the alteration of your role mean that you are to change your name from “Dr No” to “Dr Maybe”, perhaps, or Dr How Much???”
;-)
Cheers,
pplater.

In this jurisdiction a driver who has learnt the basics, but who is still very new to the wheel, is required to spend a period ‘on probation’. Such a probationary driver is required to display on her or his car, fore and aft, a plate such as this:
As you can see, it is a ‘P’ plate. Such a ‘newbie’ is a “’P’ plater”; it seemed to translate well to the horological pursuits also.
Likewise the avatar. Here’s a clue – everyone’s favourite….
…novice.
From Wikipaedia:
A novice in canon law and tradition is a prospective member of a religious order who is being tried and being proven for suitability for admission to a religious order of priests, religious brothers, or religious sisters. After a period of time as a postulant the person will be received as a novice in a ceremony that most often involves being clothed with the traditional habit of the particular religious community. Novices are not admitted to vows until they have successfully completed the prescribed period of training. This usually lasts one year, though in some orders and communities it is two.
Hence:
Your humble correspondent has hesitatingly proffered himself as a prospective member of a [near] religious order (the broad church of PPro, founded by St Thomas of Mao) and has taken a few timid steps along the horological trail but still has so very, very much to learn.
Cheers,
pplater.

Some much needed respite, laughter is often great medicine!

Thanks, Kevin.
