Seems like it's a good decision to avoid united on hindsight.
Have avoided them since 2005 after horrible experience.
Asian carriers are generally better in service from my experience.
A different case if traveling domestic in us as you are left with the usual suspects. But I would defer to southwest or Alaska where possible.
