I guess I classify as a newbie here
Hey all,
I'm a new poster here at Purists but I have been a long time follower of the posts and threads. I have already posted a couple things here and I was directed to this introductions thread, so might as well introduce myself!
I was initially attracted to Longines when I was around 12 or 13 years old. I'm a tennis player and those Andre Agassi ads by Longines must have gotten to me then. I could care less about what the inside of a watch looked like or the quality of it, I just knew that I wanted a good looking watch with a steel bracelet (an automatic movement was a plus). My sister already thought I was crazy for wanting a 1-2k watch when I was only in middle school. As I browsed through numerous online sites (dont worry, I've learned now never to buy online!), I came across other brands, specifically Breitling. Long story short, I joined another site and was introduced to yet more brands. Originally going to that forum to learn about the Blackbird that I had drooled over,my tastes for Breitling and Longines virtually dissolved.
I was intrigued by the vast complications that watches could hold - be it a simple annual calendar, to a chronograph, or a tourbillon, or even the prized minute repeater. Then it flashed before me. Clicking around the forum, pictures of movements began to show up and I was instantly hooked. Further research garnered my interest for what was inside a watch rather than just what the outside looked like. I began ordering catalogs from GP, JLC, Patek, and the like. I began watching videos all over youtube, searching keywords such as "tourbillon" or "minute repeater." And, before long, I was awed yet again. Jacquemarts this time (and GP Jackpot! :O WOW ).... Oh the joy watches can bring simply by viewing them online! I wonder what it will be like to achieve that first watch I can call my own.
Surprisingly, I had not visited many ADs at all, and even till today I have not visited many. When I traveled to New York City, I had the chance to give AD'd a quick visit. Feasting my eyes on numerous brands I had viewed hours upon hours online, it was incredible to see them in person. Incredibly, I was able to try on the UN Hourstriker! Incredible piece it was, but completely shadowed by the JLC gyrotourbillon and ALS datograph!
Anyways, this forum, Purists, has introduced me to the independents which I truly appreciate and hope to one day own. I am a long way from my first watch since I won't take anything less than the best, but I know that day will come, along with my second, third, fourth, etc. watches
Along with watches and watchmaking (a hobby I took on to make some money towards that first watch) I enjoy tennis, cello and cooking, and just recently I took up golf.
As for which watches I am looking at for my first, here's my wishlist, hehe:
-JLC Tribute to Polaris Memovox
-JLC AMVOX1
-GP WW.TC
-GO Sport Evolution Date/Chrono/GMT
-Blancpain Leman Flyback Chrono
-Blancpain Aqualung
-UN Maxi Marine chronometer
-IWC Portuguese Automatic
hmm.... that list is a lot longer than I thought it would've been....
Thanks for reading (if you made it this far)!
Regards,
Gary
