So Porsche and Rolex can be accused of the same thing, but Porsche nor Rolex charge the premium that Patek charges.....Yes they are “luxury” brands, but Rolex is a bargain compared to Patek. I would be equally critical of Bugatti or Rolls Royce who claim to be the best of breed in the luxury category. Before BMW acquired Rolls Royce, the Silver Seraph was their flagship model, which many would agree was not entirely worthy of the spirit of ecstasy on the bonnet. Likewise, many “purists” complained of the sheer size and German aesthetics of the Phantom.
The 5970 is no doubt a stunning timepiece, but it could and should have been better, I can say the same for the 5270. There is a reason Patek invested heavily to update their facilities and eventually have an in-house movement, they were feeling the heat from competitors on all levels. New generation buyers were not impressed with a Frankenstein timepiece and a “brand” is not enough if the product doesn’t deliver the hype. If one is paying Patek money, one should expect 100% Patek design, mechanics and engineering.
