I was first a little surprised when you said the 5970 was a little "lazy" and I started wondering what could you mean by that. But after I read your post in its entirety, I think I better understood where you're coming from and it's a fair assessment. Now, I will say, if you're a Patek Philippe fan, the 5970s have generally some of the best finishing of all the Patek Philippe watches made in the past 20 years. So if someone were exposed to only Patek Philippe, they'd see little else that'd beat that. Maybe a Dufour or Voutilainen or Montblanc Villeret.
At the end of the day; I have to say, the 5970 is mostly faultless when viewed without its competitors. It's a well finished movement in the traditional Swiss-French style. It's also got a beautiful design. But if we start looking at things individually, such as movement finishing, and scrutinizing it with other brands, I don't expect it to win on every comparison.
I like your perspective!
