Patek Philippe

That is scary, or disappointing or both...

For the example your provided.
Several things come to mind. I live in NYC and have the flexibility to go to HSWA if I need a watch serviced. Many people don't live close by, don't have the time or flexibility and may rely on somebody taking the watch in for them. This is going to be inconvenient at best and a travesty at worst.
As one member asked...yes they do ask for a Driver's License or some form of ID. Maybe what I remember is that they ask when you go to pick up the watch. In case you intercepted the letter in the mail that says a Patek is ready to be picked up from service. It's been a while but I think they did ask me when and where the watch was purchased and for my COO.
And finally, if this non-transferable warranty issue is true, then a 1 day old Patek will have a secondary market value that is no different than a 2 year and 1 day old Patek. Not that Patek cares about this. I think they care more about the grey market "Trusted Seller" network leveraging the "Open Papers" and 2 Yr Warranty loophole to their advantage and penalizing the honest ADs who most of us have relationships with. A gray market dealer should not be able to sell a fraudulently obtained watch with Patek's Warranty to back them up. However, a private re-sale of a legitimate purchase should not be penalized as well.
