It isn’t a one-off or isolated case – as per a reply on the forum in the second link, I mentioned that the lady I spoke with on the same day...
that Dancing Fire posted his thread in WUS, stated that it has been an ongoing issue for people who’ve been gifted a watch by family/etc.
I have no doubt that in those instances, the owner has phoned the buyer, who has spoken with HSWA, and the warranty repair has went ahead on that basis – but I’m equally sure many people have wrongly been told the warranty didn’t apply as they weren’t the original owner, and have therefore had to pay to get theirs fixed.
Again, as per the reply in this thread, you have a direct email response from the head of HSWA Customer Services, who has unequivocally stated that the warranty is non-transferable – so there’s no mass hysteria or hype here, it’s simply a case of getting to the bottom of why HSWA have been operating a policy which has no basis in law, nor re-inforced by wording to the same effect on any documentation accompanying the watch or the Patek website.
In speaking with Richard yesterday, I posed a somewhat probing question – “Is HSWA independently owned or are they owned by Patek?”. The reply was that they are owned by Patek, but structured as a separate company.
The reasoning behind that was as a result of the previous conversation, where I was told that HSWA mirrors Geneva’s policy, and Geneva tells them what to do.
So it’s not as if a senior employee of an independent distribution/service company has somehow dreamt up the policy they have been applying, but is coming from the company owners – Patek!
And what confounds things further, is that their own Boutique in Geneva has said that the name on the CoO is irrelevant, as long as the rest of it is correct.
My only aim, through contacting HSWA, has been to see that DF gets this watch (one of 4 Pateks he owns) fixed under warranty – on the presumption that he hasn’t caused the fault himself.
As a result of what has come to light, if charges of duplicity are levelled at the feet of HSWA (and ultimately HQ in Geneva for sanctioning it), then that’s for others to pick up and run with.
