What drives today’s craze about vintage Rolexes ? Love for horologerie? I doubt it.. If it is because of those patents that Rolex invented well why just Rolex move collectors this much? Why not vacheron , girrard prrregaux, Minerva, and dozens other?
The love for vintage Rolex is legit, but the discrepancy between the collectability of this brand and all the others can’t be justified just because Rolex invented a few patents.
I don’t think people pay over a million for the amazing technical horological strike of genius that was the Paul Newman Daytona ! It has nothing to do with appreciation of horologerie, otherwise millions of other watches will fetch the same results.
Nowadays vintage Rolex collecting business and its results are not the consequence of incredible historical achievements of horologerie , quite the opposite.
Your argument would be a valid one if the prices reached by vintage Rolexes weren’t this mad and other similarly technical watches from other historical companies would fetch te same.
A complicated pocket watch, compared , would cost millions then... instead you could fetch a minute repeater or a grand complications for the price of an average submariner.
