Hi Jocke...a very interesting topic

What drives one person to buy a watch?
That is a fascinating question and within that question is covered the specific issue that you raise. Namely, when a brand like Rolex or Patek produce a watch where the demand is significantly greater than the supply, then a premium develops and a long queue of willing buyers emerges. Is it right or wrong that these potential buyers are so single-minded in their drive to buy that they would rather pay a huge premium over list price and get their target rather than consider another brand of watch that might be priced at a much lower level?
My view is that its not up to me or my opinion to say its right or wrong. How someone else decides to spend their money is no business of mine. I have never bought a watch that was in production at over list price. I have one of those watches that people are queuing up to buy. The Rolex Daytona 116500. I have been with the same AD for the last decade. I have been a loyal customer and I have bought my fair share of watches. I applied for the Daytona and after a year, it arrived. At list price. If i had been asked to pay a premium I would have said no. And that is an important issue. We all have the right to say no. Equally, we all have the right to say yes too. If I wanted the watch that much and it was offered to me at a price of 40% over list, and I said yes, then that is my choice and mine alone. I don't think anyone here really has the right to judge me on that decision.
Do i own Rolex in my collection? Yes.
Patek? Yes.
Omega? Yes
IWC? Yes
JLC? Yes
Panerai? yes
Lange? Yes
Would it matter if i only owned Patek or Rolex? NO.
I find it a little sad that people in this thread are seemingly having to justify what they own and why.
