Hear hear! Completely agree.
1. I have owned many Pateks, but alas, I have none today and am no longer following those "number only" models, which is which.
2. Rolex - I own two modern, still in production one. Practical, not so shabby on the wrist, "showy" enough (kidding!). But NO VINTAGE ROLEX please. Well, no vintage watch other than Grand Seiko for me now - or I would be bashed in heavy way here.
To me, hobby is NOT investment. Investment is investment - that's my day job and I manage only other peoples' money. Hobby is hobby and hobby DOES cost by definition and I am okay with that. I buy what I like, enjoy, value goes down. So what? Again, hobby DOES cost. And I am enjoying this hobby, not looking at the secondary market price, per se. Don't get me wrong, vintage watch does have special value, and I used to collect some, but in the end, there are always several "experts" here and there, so no meaningful discussion is possible and I gave up.
Now my meager collection has several Seikos including vintage GS (super cheap, compared to what they CAN do, but can't discuss many here as it is considered ZERO or near ZERO value once the dial, for example, has been replaced even by the genuine vintage parts, but has been adjusted to +- 2sec per day - what a ridiculous logic is that?).
Yup, I buy what I like. I may LOSE a lot of money when I sell it near the time I am going to cross the river, but since it is hobby, no regret there.
Thanks for such an important question Joccke! Really nice talking to you here.
