I have pretty much abandoned vintage Rolex
Jun 01, 2018,11:07 AM
due to the insane "bubble" prices even common pieces like 5513s and 1675s are going for. I'm glad I at least have some vintage models from when they were more "reasonably" priced. And my friend, you know vintage Rolex is where I started my collecting.
As for Patek, I still can't justify the prices for mainly precious metal cases (which I don't wear nor collect); and as for those few models that are even offered in steel the prices are even more insane. I can spend that money on things that to me have better value and worth (and I'm not just talking about other watches). A new car, a house, and a nice vacation are some of the things that come to mind.
Back to Rolex. As for the modern models, I'm pretty much put off since they went to the super cases as the great proportions of the Oyster cases were lost IMHO. So the overly long wait times for availability and high prices for the ceramic SS Daytona or new BLRO GMT-Master for example, don't affect me. I recently bought one brand new Rolex (Milgauss 116400 white dial) and it's the only modern Rolex model I opened my wallet for in over a decade. And I got that one with a pretty big discount, too!
My collecting instead has branched out to vintage (military watches mainly), Omega, JLC, and also some smaller brands. There are so many great watches out there limiting myself to Rolex or Patek would deny me the opportunity to own some other greatest watches available in terms of design, history, and value.
