Horological Meandering

Good topic

Hard to generalize here, especially without offending some, but I'll toss out some ideas:

Some consumers who nearly exclusively focus on Rolex, Patek, some AP, and some other very hot models (...admittedly, there's a lot of overlap in the following list):

--they don't actually like watches as much as they like recognizable symbols of luxury (a lot of peacocking going on)

--they want to own what others desire to own (and what others possibly cannot get, or cannot get with ease)

--they are acting with a herd mentality

--they have a strong desire to be part of the in-group

I'm not calling out anyone in particular (or even in general). But absolutely the psychology of many of these "collectors" encompasses the above list. And before anyone jumps out and vociferously defends themselves, yes, we know, you're not all like that. But some, even many, are very much like that.

Notably, I think the other watch companies are partially to blame. The price increases in the last 10+ years have been insane, especially relative to resale values. Second-hand values do not justify current MSRPs for virtually all non-Rolex, non-Patek models. Do I buy Vacheron (one of the worst offenders) when faced with a 40-50% haircut on value as soon as I walk out of the boutique?

Cheers,

John
