Horological Meandering

Great thread

Both Rolex and Patek are great houses with phenomenal reputations, which helps in preserving the value of the pieces in the second hand market. For many, this value is a large part of what they are buing into. For others the reputation alone is the reason, much like with Porsche and Ferrari it is an image they are after. If you buy and sell your watches, this matters.

Personally, I don’t sell (that will be up to my daughter once I’m gone), so the value is negligent as such, and not a determining factor for me. I know I can’t be the only one ( I hope so at least, or my wife is right, I’m a hoarder). For me the big factor is: does it tug on my heartstrings? The Rolex line while I have a tremendous respect for the company does not, like Porsche I know it is great product but I don’t lust over it. I am not in a financial position to build a Patek collection, but I can dream.
But back to the heartstrings, personally it is not the brand but rather the model that does it for me. This opens me up to many brands, but does not allow for a concise collection that many of you have. There has to be something about a particular watch that draws me in be it: the face, the movement or perhaps the shape. Is it valuable, no, but boy do I love the Omega Dynamic of the late 1960’s. My daily wrist buddy is a Zenith De Luca, I fell in love with the movement and face, they have a firm grasp around my aorta.
The way we collect and what we collect, is defined by our individual personalities, meaning there can be no wrong way to go about it...just my two cents
Best regards,
Wojo
