You nailed it! Making the steel dato an application piece is a mistake imho

 

To your point, unlike a numbered limited edition, the steel datomatic is going to continue production and once supply catches up to demand, Lange would need to change their position similar to the scenarios you stated or continue it as an application piece in perpetuity with an illusion of demand. Forcing people to buy 3 watches to get the 1 they like essentially devalues those 3 pieces in exchange for positioning of the 1 and then the brand creates a difficult situation, they must maintain that hierarchy and illusion otherwise the whole scheme falls over.
