I wondered about this too. I think it depends upon the relationship between the client and the AD. If the client is unknown to the AD -- brand new -- then it makes sense for the AD to require a deposit of some form (fully refundable, mostly refundable, non-refundable, applied to store credit only, etc.). If the client is known to the AD, then I'd imagine the AD might not require a deposit, especially if the piece the AD is ordering is one that they can pretty easily sell to someone else. I think it really comes down to how much of a headache the AD might be willing to endure if the client orders a pre-sale piece and then doesn't buy it. But this seems no different than the current situation, if I want to buy any watch that isn't in a dealer's existing inventory.
