It is true that fountain pens can be seen as an outdated writing instrument but also true that for those who still hand write there is no other pen so enjoyable to write with as a fountain pen.
I´ve been writing and collecting fountain pens for many years before being introduced to watch collecting.
Since high school students like me (talking about 1958/59) wrote with them and I usued a FP every day since then, through my University period and in my first job in a big Auditors studio in 1966. There was a lot of handwriting in that job and a plain pencil and a FP was the instrument for that work every day.
I would say that since then and through the early 1990´s I kept writing lot of pages daily with them. Then the computer begun to replace its use. Nowadays I keep using my pens just to write notes and to sign documents and checks in our office. I also practice a bit of caligraphy with them.
The love for FP is still strong not only for the pleasure of writing but also by their beauty as objects.
I started seriously collecting both modern and vintage pens in the 1980´s and till around 2015 and own a very large collection. In the last few years I have been buying very few pens which I fell in love with.
In the last years I had been exploring Japanese FP which opened me a New World. Both the materials and the nibs are different marvelous concept which I discovered and loved so much.
Thank you for devoting your time to write this superb post and share your love for them!!
Best cordial regards, Abel
