I do like the 149 and my daily pen is the 146. I really like my 146.
I don't use vintage pens neither. I've heard horror stories about getting them repaired.
When it comes to Pelikan, I do really enjoy the M1000. It's a great pen. The nib is so much more flexible than the Montblanc 149 nib. And honestly, the Pelikan system where you can buy multiple nibs and easily screw them on or off the pen is probably the overall better system if I am being objective. I started with Montblanc, but to be entirely objective, the Pelikan may be slightly the overall better ecosystem.
I've definitely noticed that the Japanese pens are finer in nibs. And their fine nibs are very smooth and not scratchy. I just made an order for a Namiki Emperor Chinkin pen. Although I might not really use it! I intend to admire it as art and not use it.
I own a Lamy Safari (it's somewhere around here!), but I don't own a Lamy 2000. I've tried the Lamy 2000, but I found the nib to be a bit too firm. I didn't try it extensively, just in the Lamy shop - and I get the heebie-jeebies trying a pen that a hundred other people have tried - so I immediately jumped into a nearby hotel to wash my hands, but I do like the mid-century modern design - almost Bauhaus design. I'll give it another try someday.
I really like my Rotring CORE - a fountain pen made for kids some 20 + years ago. I think it's a cool space-age looking pen. And it writes well. At one point they soared to $300 in value on the secondary market! Now they're around $100 - still too high for a $30 pen 20 years ago. I really liked Rotring's 600 series pens and the pencil. I find that to be the best sketching pencil in the world!
Ok, you got me on MUSIC nibs. I have not tried MUSIC nibs. I've seen them offered before, I think I would like them since they're wet, they can be bold side to side and thin up and down (I like that effect in fountain pens) and I think I would like music nibs A LOT. Maybe I ought to try one! Now you've got me thinking! Which music nib do you use? Seems that it's mostly the Japanese producers who still make this nib! Maybe a Sailor or a Pilot or a Namiki?
In general, I prefer plastic pens. The metal bodied pens are too heavy for me. I've got a metal bodied Cartier that weighs 60 grams with the cap on and still a lot with the cap off. Too heavy for me. Montblanc 146/149 and Pelikan M800/M900 are the best pens for me!
