Horological Meandering

Very nice, Andrew...

that's a fine example, and report. I have one which is being serviced at the moment, but I've included a photo below.

One interesting tidbit from Heinz Hampel's valuable "Automatic Wristwatches" book is as follows:

"Since the long-term reliability of these fast-beat escapements [in the cal. 430/31 movements] caused even greater problems, they soon gained a reputation as poor sellers. Until Longines could produce its own improved second-generation high-frequency movement in 1972, Caliber 6641 with only 28,888 BPH, the firm found itself compelled to utilize modified ETA movements (Caliber 633.1)."

There are a remarkable variety of Ultra-Chron case and dial designs, which stimulates my interest in possibly finding another to add to the one that I own. And it just so happens that I have some scans from a Japanese Longines brochure from the early '70's, which illustrates that variety.

Enjoy!

Regards,

Tony C.
