Not to cash in but to keep on wearing safely and to (re)focus the collection
Nov 25, 2021,12:23 PM
Late to the party, likely repeating the same points as mentioned earlier:
(1) when the watches values started skyrocketing, I have sold “hyped” pieces - mainly because I was getting undue attention: Recent example was a PP 5726 last year not to cash-in but because I started to get comment from unknown teenagers in the street regarding nautilus and it made me feel (slightly) uncomfortable.
(2) in addition to that, and during CoViD I started to rethink a bit my views on collecting; and I decided that I should buy (and own) what makes me happy, and wear it accordingly. And it led to a certain focus in the collection: Review what I hadn’t worn and then redeploy the capital to other pieces that I would be more happy wearing - possibly consolidating into fewer and more attractive pieces.
(3) Finally I try to consider watches as OPEX items rather than CAPEX investments, namely that I buy them to wear (and scratch) them, and I am happy for the ones which retain their value but that I wouldn’t follow an investment logic:
For instance I have been thinking about my AP RO 15300 (whose value increased quite a bit), and came to the conclusion that as long a large I feel fine wearing&scratching it, that I don’t feel unsafe and that I do not have a consolidation wish, I would keep it.
Cheers,
Jérôme
Ps: cool topic by the way and great to hear what everyone is thinking 🤔
