Based on your friend's criteria, I would pick the following from my collection that are easily available and will not burn a big hole in the pocket.
A worldtimer.....a complication that is useful but not too complicated š
A modern Speedy for a chronograph with rich history
A simple dress watch with a distinguished feature...such as a fume dial from Moser
And lastly, a Rolex for the sports category. A neo-vintage GMTM 16710 that can be found quite easily and relatively not as exorbitant.
