I think, especially from what your wrote, that subjectivity plays a very significant role here

I think that the feeling regarding, more or less brushed, shiny sandbalsting or darker one etc... is very personal.
For instance when I read your feeling about the magis i gone in the 5170 an d5270G white dial, I have the totally opposite feeling.
Let me explain.
The 5070G is a dial that I like but not as I love the 5270G's one. They are very different: the 5070G's very smoothly brushed (much less than 5550 or 5235) nearly not visible. It has a little warm but more matte look as well. On the other side, the 5170 and 5270's dials are sandblasted and the look is very different. Furthermore, I find, but this is subjective, that the 5270G (that I tried a lot because really tempted) was brighter and I found that "magic" you're talking about. I find the 5070's very nice but definitely not as appealing to me. Just because I prefer sandblasting to brushed surfaces and when it reflects more light.
You see that we have a totally opposite feeling about these dials. That's why I appreciate very much the diversity of dials among Patek's collections as it can appeal to different tastes. But I don't see that it has decreased.
About black dials, I must say that nearly each time I see one, they look different, like a complete new one (except for lacquered or enamel of course).
We always want to find something that will surprise us and that we would love to buy but when I have a look at some brands i like out there, there are often the same dials (and same case shapes, usually simpler to day). They provide quite a good offfer in terms of diversity but my feeling is not that dials textures and look have changed.
Very subjective matter and I don't know what will be the evolution in the future
Let's see what they'll bring next for the 5270P, maybe will it be the black decoration you would like.
Best, Mark
