IWC

great post - interesting points and comments

I'm a fan of IWC, visited the manufacturer with my wife, own a few including Ingeneur from late aughts.

Let's remind ourselves of John Mayer's letter a decade ago warning IWC that they simply weren't providing sufficient value for the money.  The Ingeneur isn't in the same universe of an icon, historical importance as the submariner.  Yes, we on watch forums appreciate it but I feel something is definitely lost in the newest iteration.  Doesn't do it for me, with rivets on bezel and what I consider gaudy flag-like dial pattern.

In terms of workhorse movement, dial- and case design and robustness, submariner is not comparable to the Ingeneur ETA movement, etc. so the argument about price vis a vis the submariner is specious.   Famous photos of George Daniels, Roger Smith, Philip Dufour at the watch bench show them wearing a Rolex datejust or submariner; not Ingeneurs.
