As much as I respect both brands, neither one really does anything for me.

In Roger’s case, I’d probably lean more towards the more colourful and applied numerals/arabics of a Kari Voutilainen.
In Patek’s case, I’d soon explore (cheaper priced) alternatives from AL&S, Girard Perregaux*, and a fair few others.
With regards to a 3-hander, in the style of the RW Smith, I’d give consideration to both Lang & Heynes, and Moritz Grossmann, and even the McGonigle Brothers – that’s on the presumption that the likes of De Bethune, Andreas Strehler, Romain Gauthier, Bovet, and UrWerk are too avantgarde.
I honestly wouldn’t be buying a watch at this price point to celebrate my retirement based on what its residual value is considered to be – I’d buy whatever I liked the look of the most, irrespective of brand name.
To that end, I’d also consider FP Journe’s Octa PC – so don’t artificially restrict yourself, you’ve a lot of choice…even more so if you look at pre-owned pieces that originally sold for well over your suggested budget.
* I’m referring to only the Tourbillon single/triple bridge models.
