for your suggestions I must confess that I have tried many watches and due to my small wrist, most watches over 40mm would not work for me. Saying that the Patek is 41mm but the curved lugs helped a lot. I am partial to these two watches mainly because of the patina of the dial and also in my opinion, Roger is the shining star of independents while the Patek 5270R is really what Patek is famous for. Of course beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and Langes for example tend to be larger, thicker and heavier than the equivalent Patek. For many that may be irrelevant but for me, the watch has to feel right on the wrist. I guess it is like wearing a pair of shoes - I normally choose a well made pair that feel as if I am not wearing anything on my feet

RW Smith watches are actually out performing Pateks of a similar age in the used market and at auctions. It is all down to the supply and demand and the long waiting list for his watches. Only Daniels and Philippe Dufour do as well if not better.

For the very reason that you have already mentioned; much more likely for Patek to be around in the years to come. I also like the calendar function of the Patek and knowing so many parts are involved to make it work. Good luck with your decision.

I think the Patek would be the safe bet but I am also partial to the fact that the RW Smith is more exclusive and hand made to the nth degree!

Both models easily make it into my grail watch list! But Roger Smith is definitely on top of that list. More specifically: Series 2, white gold, blued hour/minute hands, white gold power reserve hand. A George Daniels will do too

Yes indeed, I think they are two different propositions when you start exploring. Some of Smiths videos are remarkable in particular his Guilloche techniques.

When I have talked with roger, he thinks not of just the present or the near future but also the distant future. He makes a traditional watch with traditional material with the idea that a future watchmaker will be able to service the watch and make parts

I do respectfully disagree. Roger has the capability to do the whole gamut of complications. He has the calendar now. He has done a tourbillon. I did ask him about a perpetual and he said yes to it but it was a bit more than I wanted to spend.

The Smith, to me, looks too much like the (2014) Breguet Reserve de March. Nothing new to me design wise. While the PP is more subdued than its predecessors, it actually is a fun watch to wear. Down side is having to wind it everyday. Not an easy choice.
