An accumulation would be like a set in set theory--it's simply defined by its constituent members. No more than that.
A collection, by contrast, requires *some* internal logic, even if it isn't very clear or precise what that logic is. And we can recognize that there *is* an internal logic, even if we can't explain what it is, by the fact that changing one of the members creates *some* reason to change others.
