Patek Philippe

To be as usual totally honest, my general sense is that while *at the very top* Patek collectors will be fine anyway, for a larger and larger segment of other folks the situation has ultimately become TOO competitive...

I arbitrarily defined March 30, 2022 as THE date after which it was no longer possible for the random collector to walk into a Patek Authorized Dealer and buy *some* watch. This date coincides with the announcement of the 2022 Collection at W&W --- a remarkably broad array of releases, which deliberately omitted ALL new sports models! (We wouldn't announce the new Nautilus reference 5811, among others, until the Fall.) That was pure genius on the part of Patek.

Now, for the first time in generations, virtually all references --- including Calatravas, calendars, some chronos, etc., which were traditionally hard to move --- were in high demand. While March 30, 2022 marks the culmination of a journey that started years earlier with the explosion of the sports references, and which Patek was able to masterfully capitalize on to attract enthusiasts to every corner of its catalog, now the process was officially irreversible. And I view much of what followed just as a consequence --- including the need to create more focus and, ultimately, to reduce the points of sale. The bar is now incredibly high and the message is clear: only the finest ADs will be able to offer the amazing experience of acquiring a Patek Philippe timepiece.

I seriously feel for, among others, those collectors who only bought their watches from a single AD in the past. Many of them now are entirely out of luck. It's honestly not a common scenario for *top collectors* not to be directly familiar with the Brand, but there are instances, and those will suffer in the short term. Perhaps, all of this came too fast, or the game has simply become too competitive. The perception is also that of a moving target: "How good" of a collector should I be to keep having access? If my AD survives this year, how about in three, five, or ten years? These are all legitimate questions for an enthusiast who's also not a speculator.

Some Patek collectors will likely move on to other brands --- we all know the brands that will always have watches available, no matter how hard they try to be desirable. But I love to be positive and genuinely believe that, at least at certain levels of Patek collecting, the "significant watches" will always come again... perhaps even earlier than expected! smile

Cheers my friend and co-Moderator, and thanks as usual for provoking such intelligent and fine discussions on our fantastic forum! smile
