One & only Patek

Aug 01, 2024,14:50 PM

Dear Purist,

As a non-Patek owner, I always converse with Patek collectors and ask if you can only have 1 Patek what would it be?

Of course it’s highly subjective and depends on lifestyle but please do feel free to share what would you would choose as your One & only Patek? Many thanks in advance.

Agree with 5196P as quintessential Patek

Saw it for the first time in the (semi) wild on a watch dealer's wrist and this reference is impressive yet simple. Very impactful. That being said - I own a Patek Nautilus 5712/1A-001 and despite the hype/overpriced nature of the Nautilus - I find it to ...

5935A-001

If I had to stick to the modern lineup.

5130J-001 (YG world timer)

 By: Moka-Tiger (Ron) : August 1st, 2024-15:16
PP was my holy-grail of brands to own, which I looked up to in awe. At one time I owned 4, including the YG worldtimer. I started to feel like the grass is greener on the other side of the PP world, so I sold the 5130J-001 it for the "higher-end" 5130R-00...

"Now I am PP less."

lolololo

Why is the R considered higher end than the J?

 By: ArmisT : August 2nd, 2024-03:55
Is that a general sentiment or specific to the 5130?

In general, RG is tends to be a little more valuable, higher-priced than YG.

 By: Moka-Tiger (Ron) : August 2nd, 2024-06:40
Prices tend do reflect that in some models, but it's not ony for the 5130. Whether YG or RG or WG or Platinum, the metal one chooses depends on each individual's own taste, really.

Given the history of timepieces Patek has created and its impact in the industry...

I would take the liberty to put 1 model per 'range' of complication... Sure there'll be Patek collectors who would add more insights than this but if I've to choose 'one Patek' - it is going to be one among these... Calatrava : 5196P - albeit small moveme...

It would be my 7200R London Edition

 By: sham1 : August 1st, 2024-15:21
It may be a simple two handed watch limited to 80 pieces in rose gold (although it pretends to be yellow gold in pictures!) but the fact is that this watch blends with my wrist better than any other and it was my watch of choice when I visited the Patek f...

Thank you very much for saying so Mahesh!

 By: sham1 : August 1st, 2024-17:37
If I had to reduce my collection to a two watch collection, this would be an automatic inclusion

reduced only to the essentials ! that definitely is such a worthy timepiece...

 By: mahesh : August 1st, 2024-18:47
I still wish you to keep all your collection my friend...you've a good group of timepieces !

Thank you my friend!

 By: sham1 : August 2nd, 2024-01:05
The plan is to keep every watch that blends with my wrist and that provides a feel good factor

One is hard to choose, but more than 7 or 8 too, for me, so I am somewhere in between. :))) More serioulsy, this is a tough question.

 By: amanico : August 1st, 2024-15:29
For me, it is the 5110P, the world time. BUT, the 5960A, the 5970P, the 5970 and the 5100G are my absolute favorites, if we exclude Minute Repeaters which belong to another planet.

I am noticing

a-lot of cross over from seasoned collectors, all are serious pieces and most certainly insightful tips for that elusive piece some day 🤞🙏

I think the decision tree is

1. What is your budget 2 do you want a dress watch or sports watch My favorite references are 5970, 5270, 3940, 5712, 5320.

Of the modern Pateks (within a realistic range), a 5970G...

Only if I could buy at retail price.

There can only be one.

 By: Miles_151 : August 1st, 2024-15:48
5970. The version is purely down to personal preference but the watch is simply incredible. M. But there are many in second third fourth etc etc.

Me too...

But only in my dreams ;-)

great choice !

5970r

 By: Oldskoo1 : August 1st, 2024-16:37
It gets everything pretty much perfect and the r adds so much depth, warmth and class.

Yes, for some reason, never liked the bottom date dial cutting in to the minute track.

 By: ZSHSZ : August 1st, 2024-21:48
I think it’s a big design flaw. I also find the the day/month windows a little disproportionate to the case size. On the 3970 it’s perfect but for the 5970 it should be bigger. Patek realized this and corrected it on the 5270.

Understandable critique...perhaps an imperfection, but well-integrated nonetheless.

 By: vitalsigns : August 1st, 2024-21:51
But everything else seems damn near perfect

Except the small day/month windows

 By: ZSHSZ : August 1st, 2024-22:00
I thought multiple times about selling everything and getting one, but I know it would bother me. We like what we like, right ))

I think of world timers and perpetual chronographs as quintessential Pateks (with complications)...

 By: mdg : August 1st, 2024-16:59
...other wise Calatravas are in the conversation at lower price points.

For me there are three ultimate PPs

 By: Eric67 : August 1st, 2024-18:04
The epitome of perpetual calendars: 3940. The perfect worldtimer: 5110p. The ultimate three hands watch (with date): 5227 (yes this last may be a little more controversial)

For me, 3940

 By: JoshTheCanadian : August 1st, 2024-18:53
Perfectly sized, thin, signature Patek complication, gorgeous and balanced - I think it may be one of the most unanimously loved modern Pateks. The only knock, in terms of collectability, is that it was made for a long time. But a first series 3940 in gre...

Maybe one day!

Rather than pick something i would never own, I will go with one i do that reminds me of a very special time in my life. I would sell a lung before i sold that one.

3800a or j. 😉

A 5270J perhaps…

Hard to choose one.. 3940 1st series or 3940p, 2526, 3428.. Dream one and done pieces. I would choose comfort and ability to just blend into the wrist over a thicker Perpetual calendar chrono or manual wind chronograph. More of a daily wear. The 5110 seri...
