Independents

Yes and no.

At W&W 2025 there really are a couple of interesting pieces by the big houses. My absolute favorite is the Zenith G.F.J. But by and large they’ve f-ed it up so many times that the value proposition has been weak for me for years. In the last decade independents have emerged and made the value proposition stronger (note, I’m not referring to price). So will I return to the big brands ? Definitely not in a big way with this year as an exception. I think the big houses have had their time of day, peaked and have started to decline. The problem is that they create too many watches that nobody wants (they never listen to the collectors!). The way forward would be independents. And yes, they are not cheap, because labor cost is high and they largely have not achieved economies of scale, AND are not meant to operate like that anyway. But not all independents can be collected. So buy with discernment. That said, I am definitely going to pass on that Raul Pages watch.
