Independents

Firstly a slight correction

It is a three handed watch, not a two handed watch. Secondly, although that price may seem steep for a three handed watch, there is little doubt that even at the offered price, the watch will be snapped up probably before Watches and Wonders ends. Thirdly, I believe there are at least three categories of independent watchmaking - the budget brands, the medium tier and the haute horology ones.  Although the amount asked might seem exorbitant, it is relatively good value compared to RW Smith, a Voutilainen, a Biver, a Rexhep, a Simon Brette, a Peterman Bedat among others.  These brands including Raul Pages have managed to attract a cult following- a group of hardcore and well healed collectors who would snap up their watches when released.  If at that price the watches remain unsold, then, I would fully agree that the price is too high but the fact that they get sold off quickly shows that high end watchmaking is destined for the very well healed of which unfortunately most of us may not belong to.  For those looking for well made independent watches that do not cost an arm an a leg relatively, one should focus on the middle tier brands like Laurent Ferrier, Pascal Coyon and Berneron. In addition, I am pleased to see that watchmakers like Raul Pages being able to sell their watches at the prices asked simply because it attracts the very best watchmakers into the industry which for me can only be a postive sign for the watchmaking industry.
