You post is very entertaining and right on the mark, as I too have been smitten with the same affliction, in approximately the same time frame. As with you, every watch I find and lust for seems (often exponentially) more expensive than the last! The only variation I can see between our recent experiences is that I have gotten my wife on board by buying her a watch or two along the way (eg Bell & Ross, et al). For me, it's been primarily watch forums
...then research afterwards. Multiple sources of information are critical for objectivity. I rarely use manufacturer sources (including any press releases) except to get specs and possibly better pictures.
And just to add...
Nothing beats the expertise of a trusted watch friend. Some of us are generalists (like me), other heavily specialize. Always good to surround yourself with people who know more than you do. I am always learning new things.
