The cork box is collectible solely for the reason that collectors in general have an insatiable desire for a complete set and those collectors with a 3711/3712 Nautilus meet that criteria. The cost of the cork boxes is simple supply and demand.
There have been less than a dozen boxes for sale in the past several years with many more collectors than that with incomplete sets. When one comes on the market, bidding can easily exceed $30k not because the box itself is worth it, but because having a complete set is. The money put into the cork box is easily recouped in the overall value of the 3711/3712 when it is a complete set.
Yes, it is easy to discount the validity and worth of the boxes by simply writing them off as a “$20k cork box” but one must understand the upper echelon of collecting to be able to rationalize such a purchase. It is difficult to rationalize, in any form, the hodinkee travel clock.

Nothing. (Hodinkee travel clock) Be a watch enthusiast, what in the world must we do like everything with a clock? Yeah, the JLC Atmos is a different story. That’s a jewel you can set on a cabinet in the living room to enjoy the looks.

I guess the double role of being journalist, critic and opinion maker and then the very next minute having products to sell and unclear motifs and agendas provoke this animosity. I stopped reading years ago and whenever sometimes I’m led back to the site ...
As a product, it’s attractive. It looks cool, and inspires a certain reaction or nostalgia.
I can’t comment on the value / price but all I will say is we live in a world of overpriced products, let’s not be beating these guys over the head because of their ability to insert some emotional/nostalgic/marketing hook that might add a few thousand do...

Sir, 1900% is equivalent to 19x the production cost. If we estimate production cost to be $500 (very reasonable) then the selling price would be $9,500 (price of a Submariner).
If you think it costs Rolex more than $500 to build a Submariner then we'll just agree to disagree and still be friends.
My reaction is based on a judgement of watchmaking in a workmanlike manner (aka handcraft) related to price.
My reason for being critical is that the initial pictures show a rudimentary finished movement based on the simplest and cheapest of all watch movement production methods. That is not the case for most of the interesting watches discussed on this forum. w...

Sir, there was a recent post in the Patek forum about 2 Patek cork watch boxes selling at auction for over $20K each (including commission).
My point is that determining "dollar value" for cork boxes, Hodinkee desk clocks or Rolex Submariners is a pointless exercise. And it most certainly has very little to do with craftsmanship. You personally may attribute a great deal of value to craftsmans...
