Pay to play?

So this post is a serious discussion about something that absolutely infuriates me and I'm hoping it hews to the PuristS code of conduct and won't be removed. Hodinkee put up for sale exclusively through their website a tweaked model of the VC Les Histori...
fair response Christian

I don\'t assume something nefarious from Hodinkee. Their VC watch is attractive and cheers to the 36 future owners. But in my eyes they did not clearly show the division of editorial vs. commercial business with this VC special edition watch rollout. They...
I understand but..
By: christianch : February 12th, 2017-04:35
in my eyes it is like this: first hodinkee identifies a particular watch they like or love and then there is a collaboration. So I don't think for a second that Jack or other writes were not honest in saying what they said about this model, regardless of ...
the ones I remember are
By: Joepny : February 11th, 2017-19:15
the three-on-three article from this past Monday or Tuesday. The 2016 VC Overseas 3-hander was compared to the current AP RO 3-hander and the 2016 Piaget Polo 3-hander. Jack Forster wrote the section on the VC Overseas. And Jack\'s perspective was plainly...
good point Harry
By: Joepny : February 11th, 2017-19:30
I\'m demanding more from Hodinkee because their influence is growing stronger every year. If they continue to provide free content on the web, they just need to disclose it when the content is structured like a watch review or an impartial analysis. A 1 s...
You are spot on...
By: andrewluff : February 12th, 2017-03:01
They are a business and in the business of making money via advertorials... its nothing new, the printing press has been selling good reviews for years. How many brands would continue to advertise with newspapers, magazines or sites like Hodinkee, if they...
I do concur
By: agyzace : February 11th, 2017-22:50
I have been reading them since years. All this has been pretty clear to me when I see a guy who could not afford a basic three hand Lange, traveling now with a Dufour in his arm. I am happy for him since he loves watches indeed imo, but it does make me re...
Specific to TAG Heuer
By: MTF : February 12th, 2017-02:50
Confining myself to possible reason for TAG Heuer or Heuer prices strengthening at auctions recently. TAG Heuer recently set out a new policy to be the guardians of their own patrimony. This means they will attempt to restore rather than replace vintage p...
I see what you're saying
By: Harry2 : February 12th, 2017-08:24
I think this is important, you have made a good point here. However, perhaps HODINKEE are helping us in a way. They steered me on to Grand Seiko, that was a good idea! I think they were genuinely right to do so, the believe in the brand and rightly so. I ...
This is how the busines
By: watch-er : February 12th, 2017-08:30
is invariably done throughout. Manufacturers advertise in the watch magazines and receive favorable press. The poster here knows this site sells VC watches and apparently all kinds of watches. To assume Hodinkee is unethical or dishonest and deliberately ...
Does anybody represent
By: watch-er : February 12th, 2017-09:19
they are independent and ethical watch journalists? To do so they would have to have no connection with or receive anything of value from the watch companies. I believe Consumer Reports attempts to do this in their opinions. Watch reviewers would have to ...
My first post
By: Lenrock : February 12th, 2017-10:09
I was one of the people that applied after 3 min from the moment when was available. I got the registration mesage that I'm going to be contacted but no phone from H or VC. I see here also that some people got it so for me its clear that they sold it mont...
Sums up well
By: Thevenin : February 12th, 2017-17:32
I think it is naive to get frustrated or to be disappointed by what Hodinkee is after. They have a "shop" for quite some time now, and their coverage phase shifted long before that. What remains to look for, is the point, spirit or some sort of originalit...

the auction season coverage is a whole other can of worms. I remember you wrote about it briefly last year in a thread. We have agreement. I think this horse has been beaten enough this weekend. Cheers! Hope you survived the storms. My back aches from the...
Collector's summit
By: romulux : February 13th, 2017-06:52
I remember the flak they get when they hosted the for-pay Collector's Summit. I'd have to believe they have started building a clientele list, so to speak. One of the IG accounts I follow have been posting the watch within a couple days since the announce...
Yes and yes!
By: TheMadDruid : February 13th, 2017-07:15
I would not doubt that they have a "list of friends" that just might get the word a little early. And Hodinkee wouldn't even allow comments on the posts advertising the Summit to which you refer. That stood out in my mind at the time.
