Then I do not quite understand this hostile attitude? But maybe itโ€™s me who is in the wrong place?

Nothing. (Hodinkee travel clock) Be a watch enthusiast, what in the world must we do like everything with a clock? Yeah, the JLC Atmos is a different story. Thatโ€™s a jewel you can set on a cabinet in the living room to enjoy the looks.

YES!!!

Half a million in a minute. Likely one of the most useless things for a traveler, just a waste of room and money

Even more amazing

I'll be honest, when I saw this, I hated it.

 By: BigFatPauli : July 23rd, 2020-12:54
And now after looking at again a few hours later... I still hate it. This is a real head scratcher for me personally, but Ben has sold all of them in record time. Say what we will about it, the guy knows his market and his customer. From a clock point of ...

It's not so much the market and the customer.

 By: TheMadDruid : July 23rd, 2020-15:38
He knows that people (guys) his age with bucks to blow have become enamored of him and his ezine and will willingly depart with their cash to be his friend.

Are those guys not his market and customer?

They seems to be...

Why do I need a travel clock

I have nothing to add, your honour

Everything has been said by the prosecution ;-)

They sort of are..

They are basically a lifestyle brand.

Is there the thing where we saw a pilar (or was it Roskopf) movement the other day?

 By: xyz123abc : July 23rd, 2020-13:48
And then they are charging over 5K for it! The marvels of modern marketing.

The folks at Hodinkee aren't idiots

 By: JohnFM : July 23rd, 2020-14:09
... but this is a misstep, sold out or not.

If I spent 6k on this...

 By: robsallnow : July 23rd, 2020-14:19
...I wouldn't be able to sleep at night, rendering the alarm function useless

Hodinkee has issues

 By: Mostel : July 23rd, 2020-14:46
They are a force in the blog / vlog world But they inspire animosity in collectors... Not good... This clock... ugh

Very well said, Mostel

 By: ChristianDK : July 24th, 2020-10:49
I guess the double role of being journalist, critic and opinion maker and then the very next minute having products to sell and unclear motifs and agendas provoke this animosity. I stopped reading years ago and whenever sometimes Iโ€™m led back to the site ...

As a product, itโ€™s attractive. It looks cool, and inspires a certain reaction or nostalgia.

 By: Jay (Eire) : July 23rd, 2020-15:48
I canโ€™t comment on the value / price but all I will say is we live in a world of overpriced products, letโ€™s not be beating these guys over the head because of their ability to insert some emotional/nostalgic/marketing hook that might add a few thousand do...

If anyone believes they actually sold them all...

Then you're a person I'd like to play poker with! Comments disabled on the Dink post. Hmmm.... WatchHumor on IG is having a field day. Made for an enjoyable distraction today.

The real deal

 By: ChristianDK : July 24th, 2020-10:51
I have a few of these as well. One could build a nice collection of these for 5900 usd.

The difference, to me...

 By: r0gue : July 23rd, 2020-19:43
...is quite clear. Do you, perhaps, own a fair amount of Brookstone products? ;^)

So you know that the production cost of a Rolex watch is 5,2 US dollar?

 By: xyz123abc : July 24th, 2020-05:06
Well, then you have much more knowledge about the watch industry than I do.

Sir, 1900% is equivalent to 19x the production cost. If we estimate production cost to be $500 (very reasonable) then the selling price would be $9,500 (price of a Submariner).

 By: Tavio_George : July 24th, 2020-05:34
If you think it costs Rolex more than $500 to build a Submariner then we'll just agree to disagree and still be friends.

My reaction is based on a judgement of watchmaking in a workmanlike manner (aka handcraft) related to price.

 By: xyz123abc : July 23rd, 2020-23:16
My reason for being critical is that the initial pictures show a rudimentary finished movement based on the simplest and cheapest of all watch movement production methods. That is not the case for most of the interesting watches discussed on this forum. w...

Debating this with you leads us nowhere.

 By: xyz123abc : July 24th, 2020-05:09
I focus on watchmaking knowledge, not the office of cork boxes, whatever that might be! Or maybe this whole forum is irrelevant to me?

I can see you have been a member of this community for a long time.

Then I do not quite understand this hostile attitude? But maybe itโ€™s me who is in the wrong place?

Sir, there was a recent post in the Patek forum about 2 Patek cork watch boxes selling at auction for over $20K each (including commission).

 By: Tavio_George : July 24th, 2020-05:45
My point is that determining "dollar value" for cork boxes, Hodinkee desk clocks or Rolex Submariners is a pointless exercise. And it most certainly has very little to do with craftsmanship. You personally may attribute a great deal of value to craftsmans...

Whatever.

 By: xyz123abc : July 24th, 2020-09:35
Ok

PM sent. [nt]

 By: FabR : July 24th, 2020-10:54

The cork box is collectible solely for the reason that collectors in general have an insatiable desire for a complete set and those collectors with a 3711/3712 Nautilus meet that criteria. The cost of the cork boxes is simple supply and demand.

 By: @Patek_Ambassador : July 28th, 2020-00:07
There have been less than a dozen boxes for sale in the past several years with many more collectors than that with incomplete sets. When one comes on the market, bidding can easily exceed $30k not because the box itself is worth it, but because having a ...

As they say there is no such thing as bad publicity. Everyones talking and texting about this Julian

So who actually manufactures this for them?
