I also have a few “lifers.” But for today’s purposes I’ll choose my 5164a.

Once I saw the 5164 I was smitten. Great symmetry, sporty, casual, comfortable, under-the-radar, and still nice enough to wear with a suit. But the main attraction was the intuitive Travel Time function. I had a Rolex GMT at the time, but the Aquanaut Travel Time function won me over.
When I happened to be in Geneva on business, I decided I would visit the Patek flagship boutique on the slim chance that they might sell me a 5164. A kind saleswoman greeted me and showed me around. I was astounded to see what appeared to be every reference that Patek was currently offering! It was like Patek heaven! I rounded a corner and in a small display alcove there it was! The 5164A! I asked to try it on. Immediately upon placing it on my wrist I knew I had to have it. “I’d like to buy this one”, I said excitedly. The saleswoman gave me a look that I’m sure she was used to giving unknowing visitors, and said, “Oh I’m so sorry sir, but this is only a display model.” “There is no movement inside.”
At once my hopes were dashed as I realized most of the watches surrounding me were display “dummies”. I too felt like a dummy. But regardless, it was an overall pleasant and memorable visit, and I couldn’t have been treated better.
While I wasn’t able to depart Geneva with my 5164, within months I was able to negotiate with a local “flipper” to buy his new 5164 for an acceptable and not-too-grievous premium. My 5164 now accompanies me on every business trip and I have even enjoyed wearing it in Geneva.
