I wouldn't be so sure about holding value with a used watch ..it could increase in value but it is so difficult to say. For a nautilus I would rather go with the 5711. I really prefer new watches that start their history with me ;) but this is highly subj... 

"to a used steel watch". I guess 3700 is not your thing. It's the original Nautilus with two-parts case and a very interesting movement. Getting rarer and rarer. Best, Kari

Own the first two of your list already...very nice watches but a bit sporty for a business / suit setting (and so is the submariner). Of course everything can work with every outfit but I think that the dd is more elegant and more of a statement. Oh well ...

Depends on what you wear e.g. many people would never wear a tie and have a smart casual attire most of the time that would work fine with the royal oak AP or nautilus steel etc. I appreciate your candour and, clearly, if you don't see a point on a watch ...

Any ETA, sellita, soprod, or valfleurier movements hack, as they do it the chinese stuff. Maybe the swatch system 51 too... Do you really consider the value of a movement by the hack of seconds? Regards

Of high value movement from a not well known brand. Nomos is a stunning example of what you said before, not only famous and well known and recognisable brands can do high end horology. Nomos does it, with great value for money. Rolex doesn't, neither int... 

There is no day-date in steel (your caterpillar example) and, more importantly, the day-date is the "high-end" collection of rolex and was never a workhorse :) This is a fact :) I don't really know what high-end is to you but " a platinum Rolex simply rem... 

The things we consider important to define an high end watch are completely different. You consider an high end watch that which has an insane price, which is statement, which is recognisable, and other things not related to horology, completely ignoring ... 

That the 324 is not the best of the automatic movements ever made, as they are the 2121 in the AP 15202 or the 240 in the 5712. But still remains a far better movement than the really cheap one in a day date. It shoud be sufficient compare the thickness o...
