Rolex

I understand but much...

Depends on what you wear e.g. many people would never wear a tie and have a smart casual attire most of the time that would work fine with the royal oak AP or nautilus steel etc.

I appreciate your candour and, clearly, if you don't see a point on a watch made of gold or platinum we are getting into a personal taste territory that can simple not be argued with.

This said a platinum DD feel is substantially different than a steel one smile The price is not necessarily insane is compared to many other high-end watches.

Producing a watch in platinum is not as simple as you might think e.g. the cost difference is not simply the price of the precious metal but accounts for the fact that, as a metal, it is not as easy to work with than steel.

My original question was driven by the curiosity to know what other forum members would have invested this budget on.  Now, as you know, the AP or PP nautilus still are prices as less than half than the day date so obviously it is not an entirely fair comparison.

Rationalising prices is not an easy task and -- with such an emotional purchase - an almost impossible task. Rest assured that the margins are very healthy in the steel watches too.

Perhaps the beauty of some watches - like the DD platinum - is that they are indeed not for everyone and this makes it to me very special.

At times I feel that both patek with the nautilus steel and AP with the royal oak ultra thin steel are exaggerating with the artificially created limited supply to generate an even increasing demand.

I still love my patek 5711 and don't particularly resent the waiting time but, clearly, it is in a different league and price range.  Obviously this is subjecting and wouldn't be persuasive to someone that doesn't like gold or platinum watches.

I can somehow related to your points differently: I am not excited by many complications like tourbillon, chrono, grand complications so may be the DD platinum is ma final milestone!
