I think the tough challenge here is the fact that back in the day, the world needed tool watches. Today, the toolwatch has become an accessory such that "innovation" as that word goes becomes a bit superficial when you think about it.
So what then is groundbreaking to what has become esentially an accessory?
That is why vintage Rolex is what it is. THE BEST. But I cannot afford it and I don't want to go that tricky route. And so I am GRATEFUL that we are still able to buy the modern versions that still have the vintage DNA.
But it indeed a great challenge, BAron and one that is very well suited for ROLEX!

Hi Nico, As usual beware of superlatives such as the first, the only, etc. This watch precedes the Milgaus by at least 20 years... and might well be the first anti-magnetic wrist watch.

All I can add is yes the Vintage Rolex has soul. They have survived the ravages of time yet the appear as modern today as any of the newer Rolex models But the retain an aesthetic balance that some of the newer model are challenging and in some cases not ...

Not sure about point 2, as each day brings its new lot of new Rolex fans and clients, who are very pleased with the Modern offers. We know both Modern abnd Vintage Rolex, and we clearly have our preferrences, but what about the new clients. As for point 4...

I own modern too.... so I am not totally anti-modern....there are certainly modern Rolex that i love. But ..... I love them because they are wearable versions of vintage that I dare not wear everyday.
I'm far from being anti modern, either.
There are two Rolex watches I love a lot: The Rasta Milgauss and the Yachtmaster. And for once, they are not really to be considered as re editions, clones of their Vintage sisters. They are, and that is very interesting, some fresh and inspired products....
YM has no vintage predecessor whereas the Rasta has the vintage Milgauss which..
