you have it right when you say
"Each one is entitled to his or her own taste and make his or her own decision"
WIS or not, if it sells, it sells. That's what count for the brand and as long as the customer is happy, it is the only thing that matters.
If someone buys the 5123 and likes it, great, why spoiling his pleasure? If the 5123 doesn't sell then PP will know they have failed.
As you said the Patek is a high quality watch, there are many watches which have a not such a quality but still have an important retail price.
There are some watches which have not a considerable horological interest but which are damn appealing for different reason, they will sell, even at high price.
We are interested in watches, but we are a minority. You say that buyers are not well informed, but to be informed, you have to be interested.

Basically, you prefer the VC between those two and you are surprised that the PP have a higher retail price.
If I put myself in the scenario, I would
.go for the Vacheron, basically because it appeals more to me, so we are exactly like another guy WIS or not. By chance the caliber is more appealing. but in this scenario I would
.give a chance to Audemars and Lange to be sure, take a look at Dubuis, Chopard and Parmigiani Fleurier, I could end with this Girard Perregaux with an enameled dial and finally before entering the pin code, I would change for the VC ultra thin 1955 which I find to die for.
Okay good I have made my decision... if I choose a big brand...
but the FP.Journe Chronomètre Souverain, De Béthune DB25 manual or the Haldimann H11 are maybe what I really want...
That's if I was in a position to buy a new watch of this kind.
Problem is that I also like vintage.
That's where madness begins.
Cheers
