I would think the simple answer would be yes.
But it does not necessarily exclude all other high end brands.
They and their pricing exist because of high level of interest, ego, envy, pride, incredible marketing, etc. But it applies to a lot of other products as well .. artwork, furniture, guns, clothing ,shoes, cars, homes, and the list just goes on and on. This goes well beyond function into the vague area of perceived value. And that perception has been reinforced by auctions, constant marketing and of course, high demand/short supply.
There are multitudes of watches which perform very well and some that even outperform Patek at a fraction of the cost but that's not what we are talking about. What makes someone spend the kind of money these pieces sell for? Money which can easily exceed the price of college educations and even homes for that matter!
Question is, is it worth it? Only the individual can answer that question and judge the monetary sacrifice to own such an object.
Personally, I feel the price levels have been pushed very hard to a point where many folks are beginning to question exactly what you have asked.
