No love for 5170?
Hi guys,
About to pull the trigger on 5170J. It will be my only Patek for a long time. I am surprised though that this beautiful watch does not get much love among the collectors here. Also, it seems to be easily available at many AD both in the US and Europe. Any thoughts why is that? Was the situation similar when 5070J was first released? Will the 5170 ever become collectable? Why is 5960 more popular? Yes, 5960 has more functionality but buying a Patek watch is not only about the features.
My other thought was to get for the same money 5712A + 5396R (instead of 5170). What do you think of that?

the reason is the high price, and the fact that there is no longer a limit as to the number of movements that can be manufactured by PP, in comparison to the Lemania based movements of the 5070.

Hi, I don't remember the launch of the 5070 or at least if itwas easily available but I've been proposed a 5070R and 5970R at the Paris salon in 2005 and I was not a customer. I love the 5170. I would get it if I could. Best Dje

I found your post. You wrote however that you prefer 5960 to 5170. How about 5960R with white dial that was just released? Would you take that over the 5170? Also, I was surprised to hear that you had issues with the movement in 5170 after 2 months only! ...
