I would add that you are talking about 20% of a good chunk of money... then again, that's a fantastic Omega that I'd be happy to own!

I was shocked by the fact that omega charged for the Crystal replacement as what would rolex charge for full service of a watch . It is disappointing that service and Crystal cost represented 20 % of the cost of a new watch.. I wonder what they are thinki...

Must have been a big diamond that did the damage. Looks perfect now

Yes it is. To be fair, i went through their service thinking it is what it is. But then a few weeks into getting my piece from service, i get a winding problem..

Of course, it was all under service warranty but for the money, i expected more. Anyway, i was able to find another outfit to service it but the experience opened my eyes to the wonderful world of horology. Key here is to have an alternative reputable wat...

Do you mean a Speedmaster vs a Daytona ?

You should only compare the service cost of a chronograph to the one for another chronograph… rather than 3 hands and date only. Although I don’t know about Rolex services charges, they may charges flat fee for all their watches.

My solution

is to buy a hesalite Speedmaster, and have it serviced at my local watch shop. Costs are usually very low and service times very fast. I know it does not compare to your piece but this is the practical way I envision Speedmaster ownership

So you paid close to 800 euro/usd for the crystal? How much was the total service?

£980

980 total sounds alright if you say it really fast. I thought you wrote the crystal was already at 700 which Rolex asks for a service. In the end it's crazy indeed what it costs to service a watch. Let's say you paid 4k for the watch, that's 1/4 already. ...

My experience with Omega service in New York has been stellar.

Service (which includes a brand new bracelet and any parts) costs $700.00. I don’t think that’s a lot considering they do this once every 8 to 10 years. As far as the crystal goes sapphire crystals are expensive to produce…don’t know about hesalite. Not o...

I checked with a certified Omega watchmaker about . . .

. . . sapphire crystals. Apparently hesalite crystals are included in Omega's service fee, but not sapphire - they're charged separately. Cordially, Art

Mechanical watches servicing involves complete dis-assembly, inspection, replacement parts, re-assembly, lubrication, seals replacement, etc…

all done by hand… then testing and regulating hence it will necessarily be costly. The sapphire crystal which is not meant to get scratched will be expensive as almost certainly hardly ever replaced and keeping spare parts inventory is expensive… The peop...
