I mean that's absurd; really. A speedmaster isn't high horology, and the parts certainly aren't hand made. Now if he had to replace that kiln fired dial, i can see the cost; but just for a crystal; no.

You should only compare the service cost of a chronograph to the one for another chronograph… rather than 3 hands and date only. Although I don’t know about Rolex services charges, they may charges flat fee for all their watches.
My solution
is to buy a hesalite Speedmaster, and have it serviced at my local watch shop. Costs are usually very low and service times very fast. I know it does not compare to your piece but this is the practical way I envision Speedmaster ownership

Mechanical watches servicing involves complete dis-assembly, inspection, replacement parts, re-assembly, lubrication, seals replacement, etc…
