My experience with Omega service in New York has been stellar.
Service (which includes a brand new bracelet and any parts) costs $700.00. I don’t think that’s a lot considering they do this once every 8 to 10 years. As far as the crystal goes sapphire crystals are expensive to produce…don’t know about hesalite. Not only that Omega is timely. I would rather pay a little more instead of the horror story delay stories I hear about with other brands.

Do you mean a Speedmaster vs a Daytona ?
You should only compare the service cost of a chronograph to the one for another chronograph… rather than 3 hands and date only. Although I don’t know about Rolex services charges, they may charges flat fee for all their watches.
My solution
is to buy a hesalite Speedmaster, and have it serviced at my local watch shop. Costs are usually very low and service times very fast. I know it does not compare to your piece but this is the practical way I envision Speedmaster ownership

980 total sounds alright if you say it really fast. I thought you wrote the crystal was already at 700 which Rolex asks for a service. In the end it's crazy indeed what it costs to service a watch. Let's say you paid 4k for the watch, that's 1/4 already. ...

Mechanical watches servicing involves complete dis-assembly, inspection, replacement parts, re-assembly, lubrication, seals replacement, etc…
