Leather for swimming

First off, glad to see you can finally enjoy your watch!

As to swimming, I swam & dive with an inexpensive (BradyB) leather and generally don't find any issues. After salt water I rinse well and soak a few hours in clean (bottled) water in a glass. Air dry fully (no hair dryer), and apply a coat of mink's oil on both sides and roll them around to bring back the suppleness. To my eyes it looks just the same.

My rationale is that the leather tags on all of my jeans have gone thru numerous wash cycles (with detergent!) AND dryer cycle (high heat!) and I never had any problem in all the years I wore jeans.

But some caveats: (1) YMMV. (2) Ammo/rustic leather works better as any further marks or discoloration is simply patina. (3) Start with a slightly wider strap (eg. 26.5mm width for a 47mm luminor) so if they shrink slightly, it's still usable (though mine didn't appear to shrink at all). (4) I rotate straps quite often so I never run into stinky strap issues from sweat buildup. (5) mink oil occassionally.

All the best!
