Horological Meandering

My view on collecting

My view on collecting is that I decided from the start that my collection will be less than 10 watches, simply because I cannot afford all of them! But also because having a limited number of watches make you better: better at finding yourself, watches are a question of taste and personality, they are also pieces of art so there are a lot of you in the timepiece you choose. So, maybe if you don’t wear a piece in the end, it was not for you and you made a wrong decision in purchasing the watch in the first place.

Also, knowledge is important and I enjoy the process of deciding on a watch. Recently, I decided that rather than 10 watches my collection should only have 7 watches: 2 daily beaters (tool watches - steel), 2 Pateks (one WG, one YG), 2 VCs (one WG, one YG), and one extra (RG or P). The fact that I decided to have at least a pair of dailies, VC and PP is to take into account service time so I don’t end up waiting for one piece without having a backup in the meantime. Ah and as far as sport activities are concerned – I don’t mess around with mechanical watches when gardening, swimming etc… I just use a good old G-shock.

I am enjoying this lot. It took me 2 years to decide on my 1st Patek. I guess it will take me the same time to decide on the 2nd one. Of note, out of the 7, I have 6, 2 could go so I am no different from any horological addict, the quest continues…

Thanks for this interesting thread.

Best

Stan
